About

We are a non-profit making organisation, that is a registered charity.

Our mission:
GBMF exists to provide the local community with an Islamic environment conducive to education, extra-curricular activites, and prayer facilities; catering for the full range of age groups in our community, to educate and improve awareness and create harmony and cohesiveness in our community.

History:
Over the past decade or more, the Muslim population of Perry Barr & Great Barr has steadily grown due to the movement of Muslims from the surrounding areas, like Aston, Lozells, Handsworth, etc. and even from other parts of Birmingham and the UK generally.

The GBMF came about due to the lack of a community centre for the growing Muslim population. A few concerned individuals in and around the Walsall Road, Perry Barr and even as far as Queslett Road in Great Barr, came together with a common desire to help setup something for the Muslim community and the wider Perry Barr/Great Barr community. The aim was to serve the community we live in and to promote harmony and goodwill, as well as cater for the needs of the growing Muslim population.

The vision is to provide:

  • educational services for the children and adults (both religious as well as assistance with academic support classes)
  • prayer facilities for the Muslim community
  • youth activities (eg: arranging trips to snowdon, lake district, sports activities , etc)
  • community outreach (eg: Islamic Awareness/Exhibitions etc)
  • drop in room for the elderly (ie: coffee morning hours, etc)
  • nursery classes
  • stay-and-play facilities

The GBMF, was formed with 5 trustees from various backgrounds and skills.

Over the past few years, the individuals had been meeting and discussing options available to acquire a suitable building for making the vision a reality. Alhamdolillah, the former police station on Walsall Rd, became available – we tried to acquire it prior it going to auction, however the Police Department were not willing to sell it as they wanted it to go via the auction.

We had several meetings, including meetings with a wider group of people within the Muslim community, and decided on a value of the property to us. Alhamdolillah, we managed to successfully bid for the property – £820,000, on the 6th Sept 2017.
